Media Cleanup – Find Unused and Duplicate Images in WordPress
Media
Duplicate, unused and oversized images, cleaned up safely.
Classifies every image file in the uploads folder and offers only the copies the site does not need. Nothing is deleted straight away: files go to a quarantine first and can be restored.
Free
- Identical copies (same SHA-256) and verified look-alikes at a lower resolution
- Orphan sizes: resized files WordPress no longer lists, and files in backup folders
- Full-size originals WordPress keeps next to its 2560 px copy
- Heavy and oversized images: served images above 300 KB, larger than 2560 px, and PNG photos
- References checked in posts, meta, settings, the active theme and CSS files
- Restorable quarantine for 3, 7, 10 or 30 days; every file is re-checked right before it is moved

- References built dynamically by plugin or template code cannot be seen; review the lists before you quarantine.
- Visual comparison needs PHP GD and a 64-bit PHP. AVIF copies need WordPress 6.5 and AVIF support in GD or Imagick.
Where to Get It
Available two ways: as the separate plugin Media Cleanup, or as a module of the Site Toolkit plugin. They share settings and results.
WordPress 6.2, PHP 7.4 (64-bit), GD. English interface.
How to Find Unused and Duplicate Images in WordPress
- Install the free Clearyvo Media Cleanup plugin (WordPress.org or the Download page), or Site Toolkit and switch on Media Cleanup under Site Toolkit → Modules.
- Open Media Cleanup in the WordPress admin (under Site Toolkit when you use more than one checker) and run the check. It works in short steps, so it finishes on shared hosting and large sites too.
- Read the report. Nothing on the site changes until you tick an item and confirm.
